The Week of Parliamentary Oversight over the Defence and Security Sector
In March 2021, in cooperation with the Parliament of Lithuania and the Ministry of Defence of Norway NAKO organized the Week of Parliamentary Oversight over the defence and security sector. The Week aimed at sharing experience between the Ukrainian MPs and their colleagues from the EU/NATO countries became a success. We engaged as keynote speakers high-profile MPs from Norway and Lithuania, Ambassadors of Norway and Lithuania, Ben Hodges, the former commander of both United States Army Europe (USAREUR) and the NATO Allied Land Command, Oksana Syroid, former Deputy Chairwoman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Kate Davenport, Political Advisor, Embassy of the United Kingdom, and directors of Transparency International Defence and Security and Transparency International Ukraine. Sixteen Ukrainian MPs partook in the discussions on different days including the Heads, Deputy Heads and secretaries of the parliamentary committees on Defence and Security, Euro-Atlantic integration, Foreign Affairs and Interparliamentary Cooperation, Anti-Corruption, and others.
NAKO organized 4 webinars and engaged more than 160 attendees, including MPs, their assistants, and independent experts. We received highly positive feedback from the speakers, the foreign parliaments, and the audience. The Week and its agenda was covered by several Ukrainian MPs on their pages in the social media, and Secretary to the Defence Committee Roman Kostenko published an op-ed based on his experience of the Week in one of the top Ukrainian media, Liga.net.
