Corruption Schemes at Ukroboronprom Discussed with Expert Community
On 18 June, 2019, NAKO held an expert discussion to discuss corruption schemes at state defence conglomerate Ukroboronprom and necessary reforms to tackle corruption there.

Former Ukraine’s Minister of Economy and Trade and newly appointed Member of Ukroboronprom’s Supervisory Board Aivaras Abromavičius was the keynote speaker, the other guest speakers were Ukroboronprom’s First Deputy Director Serhiy Omelchenko, US government advisor Steve Silverstein and StateWatch NGO founder Olexander Lemenov. James Wassesrtrom, NAKO co-chair, moderated the discussion. NAKO Secretary General Olena Tregub presented the six key, most harmful corruption schemes inside Ukroboronprom, along with the recommendations on how to avoid them.

Aivaras Abromavicius made a speech on how to raise the efficiency and transparency of Ukraine’s defence sector, Ukroboronprom in particular. He said that the fact that such a huge enterprise hadn’t been audited for so long speaks a lot about the lack of transparency and accountability and stressed the urgent need for the audit there. Top Ukrainian and foreign experts in Ukraine’s defence industry, representatives of embassies and NATO in Kyiv as well as defence producers joined the discussion. The need for increased transparency and accountability at Ukroboronprom was widely agreed upon.
