The control and oversight of the military aid in Ukraine is a vital issue. As a Kyiv-based NGO focusing on defence corruption, the Independent Anti-Corruption Commission (NAKO) actively monitors and analyses potential risks related to the unintended use and illegal trade of weapons within Ukraine. As of now, no such claims can be confirmed.
However, the global media recently published several materials on the arms movement within Ukraine. Some were later changed and updated due to extensive criticism concerning controversial sources, lack of confirmation, manipulative titles and conclusions.
Military aid is essential for Ukraine’s ability to perform defensive and counter offensive operations to protect and liberate Ukrainian people. Ukrainian civil society is a powerful watchdog. Even in times of war, with Martial law restrictions and limitations, it works hard to ensure the proper use of such crucial assistance.
Understanding the issue’s importance, NAKO calls on the global media to exercise a responsible approach in covering the military aid risks in Ukraine. In particular, we firmly believe that speculations without solid verifications are unacceptable. The editorial teams must be aware of the dangers such publications contain and thus be more proactive in preventing such risks before they become a subject of public debate and criticism.
Any manipulations with the military assistance narrative for promoting specific authors and public and social media debates are irresponsible and should be condemned.
