On June 28, 2023, the Cabinet of Ministers appointed German Smetanin to lead the Ukrainian Defence Industry JSC (an assignee of SC Ukroboronprom).
Smetanin is 31 years old and was previously a head of the Malyshev Plant. He is described as "a young progressive leader" who "made his way in the defence industry from an engineer to a plant director" by Oleksandr Kamyshin, Minister for Strategic Industries.
What do we know about the new director?
- Education: Kharkiv National Automobile and Highway University (specialised in automobiles) and Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (defence industry management);
- Previously, he worked as a production director at the Malyshev Plant.
- Smetanin also was a design engineer at Morozov Design Bureau and Lviv Armored Vehicles Plant.
The new director general is expected to
- Increase the production of ammunition and military equipment;
- Build an effective anti-corruption infrastructure within the company;
- Transform Ukroboronprom.
