On 14 May 2025, EU ambassadors approved the 17th package of sanctions against Russia. This was confirmed by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
Final approval of the new package will be given by the EU Foreign Affairs Council. This is expected to happen on 20 May. Immediately afterwards, the EU will start working on the 18th package.
According to the European Pravda, the 17th EU sanctions package includes restrictions against:
- nearly 200 shadow fleet vessels exporting Russian oil and oil products;
- around 30 companies that are helping Russia to circumvent sanctions, particularly with regard to dual-use goods;
- 75 individuals and legal entities linked to the Russian military-industrial complex.
In addition, EU ambassadors agreed on further sanctions packages for:
- human rights violations;
- hybrid interventions, such as damage to undersea infrastructure or interference with communications servers;
- chemical weapons proliferation, including violations of the ban on exporting chemicals for missile production.
The 16th EU sanctions package includes five companies mentioned in NAKO's reports.
