On October 23, the executive director of NAKO, Olena Tregub, met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Representatives of 20 public organizations were invited to the President’s Office to discuss the Victory Plan and its implementation. According to the President, civil society can help unite Ukrainians and the world community to support Ukraine.
“Today, we are discussing the first stage – the opportunity to defend Ukraine. Choose to win. Therefore, if we are talking about reality and results, I would like our meeting to be the beginning of our joint movement with you to move from feeling to real results,” said the President.
Olena Tregub noted that she was impressed by the duration of the meeting (more than 3 hours) and the depth of the discussion, during which it was possible to discuss most of the most pressing issues that concern society.
I reminded you that in 2019, the President promised to reform the security and defense sector by NATO standards. Some of these reforms have already been implemented or continue to be implemented even during the war. In particular, we created procurement agencies and formed supervisory boards for them. We also corporatized Ukroboronprom and are now developing partnerships with our Western allies, working to create a defense hub in Ukraine. This will allow us to be technologically ahead of our enemies,” Tregub stressed.
According to NAKO, implementing the Victory Plan is impossible without internal reforms. Those reforms, in turn, should be consistent with the expected results of the adapted Ukraine-NATO annual program. Implementing this program is important. We emphasized this in 2019 when we launched the NAKO Presidential Questionnaire so that all presidential candidates could hear their opinions on corruption in the defense sector.
The slide below shows our vision for key reforms in the security and defense sector. These are the theses that we submitted to the President. Many of these positions are already implemented. However, many things need urgent implementation on Ukraine’s path to NATO.
